Myspace Developer Platform, launch in London

Spent my Thursday afternoon and Friday in London. Meet some friends and visted the official launch party of Myspace's Developer Platform. Sources: developer.myspace, developer blogs

The conclusion of the event is, that the competition to attract widget and app developers on top of social-networks is getting harder. In the future the influence on the independent value added developers will be key for the social-networks. With myspace and facebook there are now two major player trying to organise these forces and local players such as germany's studivz haven´t even got started yet.

Exciting times for Widget companies!

Myspace is strategically coming at the right time, can't say yet if the architecture strategy is right or not. But in the past myspace's open strategy to emmbed apps was a key success factor.

We gonna develop some Widgets on Myspace Developer Platform within our iSteps Widget Venture portfolio companies.

MySpace the Money-Printing Machine or Machines?

In my view this is just the begining. There are several good revenue models hidden in myspace. The add case is of course one of the best and quickest rev driver. But I expect also good rev models around the widgets. Don´t belive that myspace gonna leave that for the widget factories alone and we of course know the multiple usage generated on widgets over spaces.

This case shows also the real market situation. Even if facebook did a good pr job in the last view month, there is still a good gap and time andvantage between nr. 1 and nr. 2.

Here the story:

At a Merrill Lynch conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, MySpace will unveil the full scope of its plans to target ads to every MySpace user. In testing for 6 months, and the result of their Strategic Data Corp acquisition, it’s a plan that could finally turn their 110 million active users into cash.

The results have been remarkable: during tests, the targeting increased the likelihood that a user would click an ad by 80%. Richard Greenfield of Pali Research predicts revenue increasing from $40 million to $70 million per month by 2008.  ...

Myspace.com got passed the 200 M Profile barrier last week. Just wondering how long Skype got for the 200 M Users compared to Myspace, even if you can´t really compare users with profiles.

Skin based Widget ads

Today mashable reported that Heavy.com is offering skin based widget ads with rev. share for blogs, sites and spaces owner. The service is called Husky Network. Last week slide.com reported also the usage of skins for ads. Have to find out, if slide is sharing the revenues with the site owners as well. Photobuket used the same way early this year ending in trouble with myspace. Skin based ads will be a major rev. model for widget services like the in game ads in games i think. But it will definitly not be the only model. We are discussing this issue with imageloop in the last view meetings and it isreally interesting how the market will move.

Slide just bought the Favorite Peeps widget company for 60K$. Looks like they want to get the developer and quick access to the facebook eco-system. Good strategy and good price.

Multiply Reaches 5 Million Users

Just wondering what the critical size of social networks will be.

Here the facts from Mutiplay (source mashable):

        1 million photos uploaded per day

        13,000 videos uploaded daily

        28,000 blog posts every day

Facebook´s pickup rate for photos is over 6 million per day. StudiVz in Germany 40 million total photos (May 2007). I am not sure if I will measure social networks by user or content in the future :-)
